The Director’s Chair is a virtual tour of the world’s film studios, seeking out the best in international movies. As you will see, we have attempted to provide a cross-section of film genres: stylish drama (Il Divo), comedy (O’Horten), historical romance (Sweet Land), a murder mystery (Jar City), a documentary (Man on Wire) and many others. A large number received prestigious awards at various film festivals around the world. Nearly all the films in the list are ones you would be fortunate indeed to see at a cinema near you, other alternatives would be a possible DVD release or being picked up for television transmission. Home viewing, however, lacks the true cinematic experience and is often spoilt by the telephone ringing or a knock at the door. Nor does it permit the sheer pleasure of a visit with friends or like-minded people in love with the medium of film and all the possibilities it can offer.
